Scott Smith, PhD, HCLD, Embryology Lab Director

A critical component of any IVF program is the embryology laboratory, the place where eggs are fertilized, and the embryos spend their first few days before implantation in the womb. We are fortunate to have teamed up with the Toll Center/ Abington Reproductive Medicine located on the campus of Abington Memorial Hospital nearby in Pennsylvania, where Dr. Derman performs all of our IVF procedures. Dr. Scott Smith is the laboratory director at Abington where he oversees all aspects of IVF lab.

He was educated at the University of Tennessee where he received his bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. After graduation, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the prestigious MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. He has worked in embryology since 1996, initially at one of the busiest and most successful IVF centers in the country in Atlanta, and then joining  the Toll Center as laboratory director in 2000. Dr. Smith is certified as both a Technical Supervisor and a High Complexity Laboratory Director by the American Board of Bioanalysts. He is also the recipient of numerous awards and well published in the field of assisted reproductive technology.
