Preconceptual screening

It is common for fertility clinics to screen their patients with blood and/or urine tests prior to starting treatments, for problems such as:

  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Genetic diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis, Tay Sachs or Sickle Cell
  • Immunity for vaccines

The exact tests may vary between clinics and from patient to patient but  are generally similar to those done by Obstetricians at the first prenatal visit. Knowing this information in advance may help guide the decisions you and your doctor make about pregnancy.
